Eating locally is eating grown foods within a 400 mile radius of where you live. It supports healthier, organic foods, as well as reduces the use of fuel and water which costs less and is better for the environment and cost effective.
Vocab: -Organic Foods: Food that is farmed without the use of pesticides, antibiotics or genetically altered organisms. -Locavore: One who tries to eat only locally grown foods. -Local Foods: Food grown within a certain radius of where you live.
Economic Issues - -If you don't buy local foods, then you use more fuel and water to have it shipped to you. Eating locally cuts down the amount of fuel and water used to get certain products to you and it'll also cost less to ship food since you won't need to pay for fuel. (Resource 2) -Locally grown food can be produced up to 400 miles away from you. (Resource 2) -When you purchase local foods, it costs less to transfer it to your local grocer than it would from farther away. (Resource 3) Environmental Issues - -The farther away the food is grown, the more fuel and water used to get it to you. Eating locally cuts down the amount of fuel and water used to get certain products to you. (Resource 2) -Eating local is better for air quality and pollution than eating organic. "In a March 2005 study by the journal Food Policy, it was found that the miles that organic food often travels to our plate creates environmental damage that outweighs the benefit of buying organic. The food doesn't have to travel by water, air, or fuel which reduces air pollution." (Resource 1) Ethical Issues - -Reasons why you would eat locally: Animals may be raised better; you know where they come from and how they're raised. You can monitor what does on at the farm by just looking at it. You can have a better idea of what you're eating and where your food comes from. For example, if I wanted to buy a chicken, there's a farm in Warminster, PA called Purely Chicken where you can directly buy their eggs and chickens - you can see exactly where and how they're raised - you know exactly what you're eating. (Resources 4 & 5) -Reasons why you wouldn't eat locally: Some crops aren't grown locally - you cannot grow junk foods, they have to be produced, which could be produced in different countries and shipped from all over the world. People like certain foods, they just come from different places. (Resources 4 & 5)
